Capacitive sensor uses a non-contact proximity field to detect a target object.  The technology provide reliable detection without mechanical wear and will outlast any limit switch.  Similar to an inductive proximity sensor but has the capability to detect much more than metallic objects.  Typical targets for capacitives are: wood, plastic, glass, powder and liquids.  Different target materials hold a different dielectric constant, which determines how well it can be detected.  Since water has a much higher dielectric constant than a plastic container, it’s possible to detect the liquid presence through the plastic walls.
